Fine Silver
When you purchase your silver jewellery, the first thing to remember is that your jewellery is made from ‘fine’ or ‘solid’ silver which is 99.9% silver as opposed to sterling silver which consists of approximately 92.5% silver, with the remaining 7.5% consisting of other metals that give sterling silver its strength. Hence, fine silver may be more be prone to surface scratching and may show more wear and tear compared to sterling silver. Try to minimise this by storing it correctly and treating it with care.
Caring for your jewellery
I do not recommend that you sleep, shower or swim in your jewellery and remember that spraying perfume or deodorant near it can cause tarnishing. Cleaning and caring for your silver jewellery is easy to do if you follow a few basic steps. With a little care and maintenance, your silver jewellery should always shine.
Silver jewellery should always be cleaned with a soft cotton cloth. Synthetic materials can cause scratching. For quick cleaning of silver, such as removing makeup or light dirt, use a small amount of liquid soap in warm water. Using your cloth, wipe the solution over the jewellery, rinse under clean warm water and dry thoroughly.
To remove tarnish or heavier dirt build-up, you will need to use special silver cleaner. There are several silver cleaning brands available from local supermarkets or DIY shops. To use a paste, the best method is to put a small amount on your cloth and gently rub it onto the charm or pendant. Allow the paste to dry then use another clean cloth to wipe the excess away. You can also rinse the piece under warm water and dry thoroughly. It is not advisable to use the polish on the detailed imprint work. As your jewellery has been lightly antiqued we would not recommend using liquid dip solutions.
Storing your Jewellery
We do not recommend that you store your jewellery with other metals or loose in a jewellery box, but rather keep your piece in the pouch/box supplied. Not only will this prevent the chain from getting tangled, it will keep other jewellery from rubbing the silver (possibly causing scratches), it will protect it from the air, which causes quick tarnishing. (Tarnishing is caused by oxidization and moisture in the air. It first appears as a golden hue on the silver, but quickly turns black).
With proper care and storage, your jewellery will bring you many years of wear and enjoyment.
